Lehava
in the City
Download updated Schedule!
The variety of Lehava
in the City makes for a dynamic, interesting and exciting way to spend the
year.
There are many
opportunities to learn new skills, hone old ones, appreciate different
cultures and adapt to new environments – all whilst enjoying the group
experience.
Lehava is dedicated to
living the ideology of Torah va’Avodah. It includes a substantial amount
of time learning Torah and a period dedicated to Avodah. In the first
sixty years of the State of Israel, we dedicated ourselves to physically
building up the Land of Israel, and this was our Avodah. With changing
times come new needs and focuses, and Lehava aims to reach the cutting
edge. It is time to dedicate ourselves to helping and improving Israel’s
most valuable natural resource – the Jewish People.
A Time to Learn
Lehava has two periods of intensive study. One is two months of Jewish
Studies at some of Israel’s leading Torah institutions, designed to cater
to different levels of learning ability and to different interests.
Varying streams and options are taught by top educators from across the
country. Time will also be spent at Machon Madrichim, a course in Jewish
leadership looking at contemporary themes regarding Israel and Judaism.
Jewish history, Tanach, the peace process, and religious Zionism are just
a few examples of the issues discussed. Such topics can be contentious and
controversial, and for anybody to understand Israel today it is essential
that they are informed about them. Tiyullim around the country are also an
important part of this component.
A Time to Volunteer
Lehava is a scheme that represents what Torah va’Avodah is all about
today. A main focus will be a two-month period of volunteering in a
development town. You will live independently, cooking and cleaning for
yourselves and making decisions as a group. You’ll be more independent
than you’ve ever been in your life, yet you can relax in the knowledge
that your needs are being looked after, thanks to your live-in madrichim,
adopting families, and the Lehava Rabbi to guide and advise you.
Volunteering
options vary according to your choices and your suitability to the task.
Options include: tutoring English in schools; co-teaching children in a
special education school; assisting in after school clubs; working with
Ethiopian immigrants; and many more.
Besides a busy
volunteering schedule the group will also complete a high-level Ulpan
course, and take part in regular Torah study, evening activities and fun
tiyullim.
For a further two
months, you will have a choice between three demanding, yet rewarding
options:
n
Marva – a basic-training course in the Israeli Army, living and
training as an Israeli soldier.
n
MDA – a Magen David Adom first aid course, and then volunteering at
a MDA station.
n
Kibbutz – waking early to work in the fields, the cow-shed, or
other Kibbutz options.
Lehava is fulfilling,
challenging and exciting, placing a different emphasis on individual
components within the year. It is geared towards what you, individually,
want from your year in Israel and allows you the security and enjoyment of
being part of a group sharing the same experiences. |
